Support the Nerd Fountain and Fill It With Shiny Pennies!
The curators of Nerd Fountain dredge the depths of our collective knowledge pools to recover shiny pennies. Each episode we spit out the hottest hotness from around the nerdy world. We love what we do. We love it so much, we want to do more.
But we’re limited by our resources. That’s where you can help out. Even a minor sponsorship can be a big boon to our minuscule budget, helping pay for website fees and equipment. A greater budget can put all of our resident nerds at the center of the action; trolling the convention circuit and first responding to cultural events. Even more than that, maybe we can get paid for doing what we love someday. We could have such a damned good time together; isn’t it pretty to think so? Go to our Patreon account now and show us how pretty we can all be.
Okay, I’m game. How’s this Patreon thingy work?
You designate an amount to give us, and whenever an episode launches, Patreon deducts that much from your bank account (technically, Patreon tallies everything together and charges you at the end of the month, but I didn’t bother to mention that because it would have taken too much time. Except I just did.) This is for episodes only. Bonus content and interviews are just that: bonuses. We start fooling around with Twitch and videos on YouTube? No charge.
In the past, episodes came out on a regular basis. But producing this much content is difficult in myriad ways. Like I mentioned before, our limited budget sometimes meant the podcast didn’t take priority over other life events in a way we would like. Ideally, we want the podcast to drop an episode every other week.
While we promise we won’t take advantage of the system to bludgeon patrons with ‘episodes’ of questionable length and frequency, we don’t need to. That’s because when you sign up, you set a max cap for Patreon to take from your account per month. If we spam our listeners with episodes, we gain little and listenership drops off. Mama didn’t raise no fools. She also said knock you out. Kinda like Shaft, so you can say I’m shaftin’.
Why aren’t you guys doing a Kickstarter/using Subbable? I do those things. Change is scary!
Kickstarter is better with one and done projects that are executed to completion. Our podcast is ongoing. We could do a Kickstarter every ‘season’, but then we’d need to campaign like politicians every year to boost our Kickstarter numbers.
Subbable is cool. And donating a certain amount every month is appealing. But Subbable doesn’t encourage creators to get work done the same way Patreon does. With Patreon, we’re payed when a job is complete. If we slack off, we lose money. Certainly that happens with Subbable as well, but the relationship isn’t immediate. By using Patreon, we’re putting power in the hands of our listeners. If we want a copy of the All in the Family board game, then we need to buckle down and pump out an episode.
